Gifting… Or not.

A dilemma:

How does one appropriately acknowledge the meaningful life event of a friend or acquaintance?

Obviously, gifts are given for one-time (or rare) events: weddings, first babies, PhD graduations, etc.  My concern is for lesser, though still deserving, moments of celebration.  I’m thinking of new jobs, new houses, published articles, non-milestone birthdays, engagements, and other exciting times.  How do you show someone you care without 1) spending a small fortune and/or 2) making the recipient feel embarrassed or uncomfortable?

I suppose the old bottle of wine thing is always an option, but it’s a bit overdone.

This is an unabashed request for your insights.  How do you show the important people in your life how pleased and excited for them you are?

I think a card or thoughtful note is always a good thing. Let’s them know you cared without spending a fortune.
